Wild Rice. Easy to find in Minnesota, right? We grow a lot of it. Well…that depends on what you mean by “wild”. The dark brown/black hulled “wild” rice at the grocery store is only wild in the sense that it is the same species growing naturally in our lakes and rivers. It is actually grown in a conventional farm field and machine harvested. The real wild rice we have for you is quite different! We harvest it from our lakes and rivers the old fashioned way, in a canoe. It is enjoyable but hard work, requiring persistence, strategy, and a little bit of luck. Collecting the rice is just the first stage. Next, we dry it in the sun before taking it to the White Earth reservation to be prepared in the traditional Native American way—parched over a wood fire, dehulled and cleaned. This gives us a delightful, mild, faster-cooking wild rice than is commonly found in grocery stores.
